You have been working on your swimsuit body for a whole year (or at least since after winter…), but what will happen during the December holidays? Will all of your hard work be lost when you leave for the beach? Or will you stay fit and healthy? Here are some holiday tips to stay fit during December:

Your body needs some time to rest while you are on holiday, but that doesn’t mean you have to turn into a couch potato. There are plenty of fun things you can do to keep your body in shape! Exercising is just as important for your brain as it is for your body. Physical activity is also a great way to bond with your loved ones. Have a positive attitude toward fitness and avoid things (or people) that stress you out.


Plan your exercise schedule

Planning ahead is the best way to avoid making excuses. Take a look at your calendar and pick out days in advance that makes sense for exercising. Early mornings might work best – everybody else is still sleeping and it won’t interfere with your plans for the rest of the day.


Keep moving

Whether you’re taking a vacation or staying at home, avoid sitting down too much. Go for a brisk walk on the beach, take a hike through the bush, or swim a few lengths in the swimming pool. Run around with the kids, find some exercise routines on YouTube, or park the furthest from the entrance to the mall when doing your festive shopping. If you want to catch up on some series, keep moving in front of the TV with light stretches or at least walking around between episodes.


Forget the all-or-nothing mindset

While on holiday, don’t try to do your usual exercise routine if it doesn’t make sense. But some exercise is better than no exercise! Every little effort counts. Improvise your exercise routine to use what you have around you, especially your body weight. Pack a skipping rope – it’s lightweight and doesn’t use up a lot of space. Planks and squats are also easy, short exercises you can do each day.

Evaluate yourself

It’s okay to cut yourself some slack during the holidays, but don’t let yourself go entirely. Set realistic goals, whether it is to keep increasing your fitness levels or to stay right where you are. Don’t avoid your scale – the sooner you realise that you are moving away from your goals, the sooner you can fix it!


Watch what goes into your mouth

When you feel like snacking, drink a glass of water first and see if the urge goes away. With the summer heat, it is especially important to keep yourself hydrated properly. However, try to avoid sugary beverages, rather stick to water. Don’t deny yourself the occasional ice-cream or slapchips – just don’t overdo it.


With these holiday tips to stay fit, this December won’t put you back to where you were before you started. Just remember: you should allow yourself to have some fun.
